eating breakfast in relationship to practice

question to the cybershala on eating breakfast in relationship to practice. my experience in 9 years of practice has been to wake up three hours before practice, eat breakfast then practice. that gave the body enough time to empty out the stomach. lately because of my busy schedule i wake up at 5:00, eat breakfast, then practice at 7:00. my stomach has not been happy and my bowels irritated. so i am considering following the tradition usually advised to practice at first with an empty stomach. my concern is that in the past i passed out from lack of energy and low blood sugar if i didn't put something in the stomach before practice. what is the cybershala's experience? do you eat some fruit before? some yogurt? drink coffee? i might give a try to having a little bit of fruit but otherwise be on an empty stomach and start practicing earlier, leaving time to have breakfast before going to work. my stomach has been feeling like Milos' with my current eating before practice.

Hello! I used to feel the same, but now i find it's ok if i eat enough the day before, but light in the evening it's interesting what one can do when empty. I just have a cup of black tea with milk while i wake up. I've come to really enjoy that totally empty feeling, everything works much better, and breskfast tastes amazing after (^o^)/ Good luck figuring out what works for you. . I also used to do a bit of apple, waked you up without the jolt coffee gives x

Your body gets used to practicing on an empty stomach after a week or two.

I didn't used to have anything before practice but now I take a swig of fruit juice, I figure there's a little sugar in that to give me some extra energy.

I get up at 5am, swig my juice, make M's lunch and start practice around twenty past five. ten minutes tadasana so it's half hour after the juice before i hit the sury's.

I do quite full on uddiyana bandha work throughout but especially in my pranayama practice after asana so couldn't handle solids before hand.

I eat breakfast after practice, half a grapefruit with a little honey, an espresso and a small bowl of Alpen with a banana on top, couple of dates perhaps.

I never eat before practice, even if I'm practising a bit later in the morning, I wait until after I finish. Like V, I found that my body adjusted to it.

Hey-so glad to see someone writing about this! I get up at 05:15 every morning and start practice around 6:45. I have a couple of dates and a BIG glass of water with the juice of half a lemon at around 05:30:lots of minerals in the lemon and a bit of slow release sugar in the dates without causing digestion to wake up too much! I always eat light in the evenings too....

Nothing but green tea with a small amount of honey. But some days even that is too much. I wake at 5:30 and start by 6:30...

Hi Arturo, my standard is to practice on an empty stomach. I had a phase where I started to get really hungry mid-way through practice, so I ate a few almonds or some granola (about 1 or 2 tablespoons) before going to the shala. Worked out fine but I found that once my body adjusted to the length of the practice, I wasn't as hungry as before.

Dear Esther
Your point is important. It would matter to eat the evening before. i lately have been eating mushrooms and greens with noodles in a soupy sauce at dinner. it seems to be sufficient for energy in the morning.
Dear V
Yes, that sound logical, that i should get accustomed to practicing on an empty stomach.
Cheers
Arturo

Dear Grimmly
The juice when you wake up is a good idea, to have some carbs for energy to the brain and muscles. i think i followed your routine more or less today. An empty stomach helped with the banda work.
Dear Kai
That is good to know. As yogis who don't eat before practice we need to pay attention to what and when we eat the night before, for energy.

Cheers

Dear Laura
With so many people mentioning dates, I need to purchase some, along with maybe raising for my porridge at breakfast. Eating light in the evening before seems wise. Thanks for writing.
Dear Loo
I tried that exactly today; good combination. I added some berries.
Cheers,
Arturo

Dear Savasanaaddict
I'm glad you're used to it by now. I once corresponded with a famous hatha yoga teacher, asking her about her diet. She is very rigorous about her eating routine. She eats about 11 almonds or walnuts upon waking up. It seems reasonable to do so.
Cheers,
Arturo
