Visit to O'hara, near Kyoto

On the third day in Kyoto during my October holiday, I took a fifty minute bus ride to the mountain suburb of O'hara to visit a series of temples. Traditionally O'Hara was a place where aristocracy settled for refuge. A visit there also exposes one to rural Japan.

This is a leather store, nothing more. Rainbow colors here have no hidden meaning as in Shinjuku-Chrome in the capital.

The main amalgam of temples is around Sanzen-In Temple. There are many shops along the paths to the temple, offering tea, pickles and dumplings.

You walk uphill along a river.

Monks live here.

People take their rest, eternally, here.

The surrounding mountains viewed over the rooftops.

This was the restaurant where I enjoyed vegetarian meal of rice, noodles with tofu, some gelatinous veggies, and a liquified taro "soup"

A tiny sink in the restaurant's bathroom.
These signs for male and female restrooms brings it down to its simplest graphics ever.
