Raigoin Temple in O'hara, Kyoto

Raigoin Temple is a little temple located in a clearing in the forest. It belongs to the Tendai sect of Japanese Buddhism and was founded by Jikaku between 851 and 854 as a place for the practice of shomyo, the chanting of Buddhist hymns. Chanting is still held in its hall. Bombai was a Buddhist himn in Sanskrit that Jikaku learned from the Chinese Tang Dynasty. Shomyo originated in India and it had a great impact on Japanese music, including folk songs.

Plan of the main hall. The temple includes homes where monks live, not shown in this plan.

Saint Ryonin built the existing temple around 1200. He built a storehouse where he kept theoretical books about Buddhism in Japan that are among the oldest in existance.
