This morning I was going through an emotional tussle. I wanted to finish a blog piece I started three days ago. I also felt I should leave the room and go to the shala. Time passed and then I realized that if I left at that time, the room would be replete and there would not be practice space, so I might as well practice at home. Then the nagging elf on the left shoulder started talking saying, it was just as well, because I could practice MY practice at home, doing what I want to do. haha. I need to get another small area heater then my room will be really cozy for self practice. Yes, there is a certain resignation in the self practice. I can light candles, burn incense, make the room comfy, enjoy my practice, but maybe miss practicing in a room with others. When the little elf talks on my ear, though, he does say logical things, pointing out that I am mostly doing Primary in the shala, sometimes a few poses from Intermediate, and sneaking Eka Pada Sirsasana as a prep for Supta Kurmasana. But my left leg bothers me in lotus bound asanas; my body does not come to standing from urdva danurasana. Wouldn't it be better to allow myself to try other poses at home? Pincha Mayurasana, the Seven Head Stands and others? I would not be able to do so at the shala. The elf is talkative, I will admit. Part of me feels unappreciative that the shala is close to the apartment and close to work and I didn't go. So much for emotional tussles.
That said, my practice report is that I was distracted by a lot of mental chatter during self practice. I managed to do standing poses, three poses in the middle of Intermediate and closing poses. Tomorrow I will go to the shala and be thankful I have it. (Edit: yoga elves are laughing at me at that statement. Tomorrow is when we observe moon day. nhyaah, nyaah.)
Moving on to another subject, a fifteen story hotel building was built in China in six days. Marc Van de Chijs linked to this time lapse photography video in his blog, Shanghaied Weblog, and I thought I should re-blog it here, being that I'm an architect.
The story is true. Here is an excerpt about it from World Architecture News:
"Construction workers in China have erected a hotel in Hunan province in just under 136 hours, putting lengthy contractors the world over to shame. Using largely pre-fabricated parts, developer Broad Sustainable Building managed to complete the scarlet New Ark Hotel in only five days and 16 hours.
Allegedly the building is sound proof, thermal insulted and able to withstand a magnitude nine earthquake, with no injuries reported throughout the entire construction process. The YouTube film below clearly demonstrates the speed kept up by workers onsite, who continued until 10pm each night until completion."
