Yasaka Shrine, Kyoto

The Yasaka Shrine is a Shinto shrine in the Gion District of Kyoto. It was first built in 656 AD. Most of the buildings that remain today are from a reconstruction in 1654.

Visitors pour water over their hands at these lavatories before going to pray.

The Honden (spirit hall) is a single-story building with a wooden shingle roof. Worshippers wake up the god with the clap of the hands and a rattle of the bells at the front of the building, then pray.

nice to see this in daylight, think I've only been there in the evenings, used to be a convenient shortcut cutting through the Shrine. Father-in-law used to have a shop right next to here.

Dear Grimmly
I learned quickly how to recognize Shinto shrines from the bright reds and absence of sculptures. Wow so father in law worked in the Gion area.
Cheers,
Arturo
