We had led class today, one of the few times I do the Primary series in its entirety in a practice, since I split my practice. My blood pressure has been borderline high recently. I think I have to reduce my carbohydrate consumption, starting with eliminating bread.
Professor Cynthia Kenyon is a researcher on longevity. In this article she states that, ‘Carbohydrates, and especially refined ones like sugar, make you produce lots of extra insulin. I’ve been keeping my intake really low ever since I discovered this. ‘I’ve cut out all starch such as potatoes, noodles, rice, bread and pasta. Instead I have salads, but no sweet dressing, lots of olive oil and nuts, tons of green vegetables along with cheese, chicken and eggs."
Now, I'm vegetarian, so it's difficult to eliminate carbs and chicken is not an option. I can start, though, by eliminating bread and keep observing what is happening with the blood pressure. In my google research I turned up that, "High insulin levels raise hypertension risk, possibly by encouraging your kidneys to retain sodium and water." So that explains the higher blood pressure.

Arturo,
Interesting article – being a vegetarian, this will help me cut down some more on my carbohydrates.
There is an interesting item in the Nov/Dec Harvard Magazine (pp. 12-13) on how the caloric intake restriction and exercise have dramatic, beneficial effects on mental acuity and motor ability (from Joshau Sanes – in Aug PSAS).

Dear Ralph,
Thanks for your comments. If you subscribe to the emails of the calorie restriction society, the topic you mention is discussed daily.
Cheers,
