prasarita breakfast venture

prasarita paddotanasana C yesterday. i'm not one of those bendy people who get the arms to the floor in this asana. i managed to get the practice space warm and enjoyed my yoga practice. the weather gods relented and we had a warmer day. i also had a full breakfast 2 hours before practice, rather than splitting into before and after practice. that may have given me more energy. prior to practice i surfed the ashtanga and CR blogs for inspiration for both my diet and my yoga. we all face the same challenges - difficulties with our diets and with our practice. people share how they overcome these to enjoy their practices. a blog new to me is that of nycashtangi, who wants to draw inspiration for growing a home practice. cheers to that. happy new year. i am not sure if i will venture into the city to capture fireworks. it could be very cold outside at night.

hi Ursula, you too! it was 0 degrees centigrade here. i went for a massage and returned home in time to watch the countdown to 2010 in Shanghai on TV. the Chinese celebrate more their new year, which is around February 15, so other than seeing the subway more full than ever with people going home early for a long weekend, i didn't note public celebratory cheers.

hi V, thanks! you too. in the local TV in Beijing, they ringed in the new year in Chinese, English, Spanish and French. i found it interesting to hear a native Chinese speaking fluent castilian.

Happy New Year Arturo,

I dunno about sliding into Hanumanasana tho, more likely to happen without warning when I return to the ice and snow back home!

hi Kevin, Grimmly, thanks!
Kevin, regarding spontaneous hanumanasanas, ha ha, yes, icy sidewalks can definitely bring them on.

Hi Arturo, happy new year! I dont put my hands to the floor either in Prasarita C... I guess it is a question of letting gravity do its thing, over time :)

hi Claudia, thanks, you too! i've seen improvements in getting to the floor, but it takes a long time.
cheers,
Arturo

I always love your pictures, Arturo. I never do this asana with that arm position anymore since befriending some Iyengar teachers. I asked them about this one, because I had a question as to whether it was a good idea to 'stretch' the muscles and tendons in that way. Just think about it yourself a little bit and see if it makes sense. Anyway, they said that this arm position does not appear in Iyengar, and they do prayer hands behind the back for this. So that is what I do. When you think about what each arm position is doing, the second one makes more sense to me. Also, I have a friend who had a badly torn rotator cuff that needed surgery, and I suspect that an asana like this may have contributed. To me, it's all about surviving the yoga into old age. Hope you don't mind my two cents on this one.

hi Dana, thanks! i agree that the reverse namaste hands when doing this asana is sensible. the shoulders do feel cranked if one goes to the floor in traditional prasarita paddotanasana C.
cheers,
Arturo
